***********************************
* 3.5 INCH DISKETTE LABEL MAKER *
* Version 3 *
***********************************
written by Joe Vicas
------------------------------------------------------------
This file is 6 pages long. To print it out, at your
system prompt, type: PRINT README.TXT
If asked for the list device, press ENTER.
------------------------------------------------------------
This is a simple program that was written specifically for 3.5 inch
diskette users. It lets you choose how to list your files. It also allows
you to print out labels with very small print or regular sized print
hardcopies.
This program is shareware. For information concerning the registered
version, please refer to that section in this documentation. Thank you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
********** NOTES ON ENTERING INFORMATION **********
First of all, you must know in advance what files are on the diskette
you want to make a label/hardcopy for. Sorry, but this program can't do a
directory listing for you.
All of the examples of user responses in this document are printed in
upper case (CAPS). When running the program, case doesn't matter. You can make
either upper or lower case responses.
Each square of a field represents one character to show how much space
there is left in a line. The squares will not print out on either the label or
hardcopy.
When you type in an entry in any field, what-you-type-is-what-you-get.
If you want all CAPITAL letters, then type them in that way. Also, if you
fill the entire field, the cursor will advance one space beyond the last
square. This allows you to edit the field by using the BACKSPACE key. To
accept your entry, just press ENTER.
After typing in the information, (whether you fill the entire field or
not), pressing ENTER records your entry and advances you to the next field.
At this point in time, there's no correction feature. In other words,
once you type in a field and press ENTER, that's the way the field is going to
print out unless you start over. It would be wise to know in advance what you
want on the label and double check your spelling before pressing ENTER.
Using BACKSPACE allows you to edit the field while you are still in it
but once you press ENTER and advance to the next field, you cannot go back to
make a correction in a previous field.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RUNNING THE PROGRAM
To run the program, at your system prompt type: DL3
A title screen will appear. Press any key to continue.
Now you will see the first input screen and the cursor will be at first
square of the TITLE OF DISK field.
TITLE OF DISK: Limited to 12 characters/spaces. The "name" you assign to your
diskette is printed out on the label in double wide, emphasized
print. It is printed out using standard print on the hardcopy.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FILENAME.EXT - Limited to 12 characters/spaces. Type in the name of the file
exactly as you want it.
When you are at the first square of a line in this field, pressing ENTER
will bring up a message asking you if you want to Print or Continue. This
allows you to print a label for a disk that only has a few files on it. If you
should press ENTER by accident and the message pops up, simply press the
letter C and the program will resume where you left off. Please note that the
message will not appear if you press ENTER (by accident or not) in the other
2 fields.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SEPARATOR - Limited to one character/space. This field allows you to enter a
character so that you might easily identify related files at a
glance. For example, documents might be noted with an asterisk
(*), games with a hyphen (-), utility programs with a colon (:),
etc. Any printable character can be entered.
To leave this field blank, just press ENTER.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COMMENT OR FILENAME.EXT - Limited to 25 characters/spaces. You can type in a
comment for the file in the left hand column, or use
it to list another filename (if your disk has more
than 20 files or you don't need/want comments).
Again, to leave this field blank, just press ENTER.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are 2 input screens. Screen #1 allows 12 file entries with
adjoining comments and Screen #2 allows 13 entries. As mentioned earlier, if
you want to print less than that, press ENTER at the first square of a line in
the FILENAME.EXT column and a message will pop up at the bottom right hand
corner of the screen asking you if you want to Print or Continue. Pressing P
will bring up the Print Menu, pressing C will put you back where you were.
You can have a filename in the left hand column and use two or three
comment lines for it, as in the following example:
1) Type in the FILENAME.EXT and press ENTER.
2) Type in the SEPARATOR and press ENTER.
3) Type in the COMMENT and press ENTER.
4) Now type a SPACE (press the SPACEBAR) at the first
square in the FILENAME.EXT column and press ENTER.
5) Leave the SEPARATOR blank by pressing ENTER.
6) Type in the second COMMENT and press ENTER.
When the label (or hardcopy) prints out, you will have one filename with
two lines of comments. The second FILENAME.EXT and SEPARATOR lines will be
blank.
Naturally, you won't be able to fit 25 files on a label if you do that,
but on the other hand, if you don't need comments, you can list 50 filenames
(24 in screen #1 and 26 in screen #2).
If you progress all the way through the screen and ENTER information in
the last COMMENT field, a message will automatically pop up at the bottom
right hand corner of the screen, asking if you want to Print or Continue.
If you press C, a second screen with empty fields will appear. Your first
screen entries are stored in memory and are not lost. Pressing P brings up
the Print Menu.
The second screen operates exactly like the first. To bring up the Print
Menu, press ENTER in the first square of a line in the FILENAME.EXT column and
then when the message pops up, press P.
If you progress all the way through the second screen, after ENTERing the
last COMMENT, the program automatically goes to the Print Menu. From here, you
can print the label, print out a hardcopy, exit the program, or create another
label.
If you select P or H, another screen will appear to remind you to put in
labels, (or paper if you're printing a hardcopy), and turn on your printer.
Pressing any key will then print out the label (or hardcopy). Pressing Q will
return you to the Print Menu.
**Twenty-five entries (with adjoining comments) will fit on a 2 3/4" x 2 3/4"
label. (More information is in the LABEL section of this documentation.)
**The hardcopy feature prints out the label using your standard type quality
and size. This is useful for making a separate index of diskettes.
After printing the label or hardcopy, the program returns to the Print
Menu.
The last label you make will remain in memory until you either create a
new label or exit the program. So if your label does not print correctly
because the label jams or something, you can reprint it again after fixing the
problem.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUITING THE PROGRAM
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can exit/quit the program at any point by going to the Print Menu.
Press ENTER in the first space of the FILENAME.EXT column. A message will pop
up asking you if you want to Print or Continue. Press P and the Print Menu
will appear. Then press Q to Quit.
After printing a label or hardcopy, the program automatically goes back
to the Print Menu.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ERROR MESSAGES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you should enter more letters/characters in a field than the field
allows, an error message will pop up, telling you how many letters/characters
are allowed. Press any key, and the entry will be wiped clean and you can then
re-enter information in that field.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LABELS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This program is configured to print on labels that measure 2 3/4" x
2 3/4" on continuous feed sheets.
Also, if you adjust the first label to start printing (for example) one
inch from the top, then all following labels (on continuous feed sheets) will
start printing one inch from the top.
In talking with people, I have discovered that most stores, (computer or
stationary), don't stock 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" labels on continuous feed sheets, (or
even that sized label, period). So as a public service, I contacted Disks And
Labels To Go and they gave me permission to list their company and products
here. You can reach them at:
DISKS AND LABELS TO GO
Rt. 206, Eastampton Business Park
Mt. Holly, NJ 08060
PHONE: 1-800-426-3303 (You can call for their catalog/price list
or place an order at this number)
IN NJ: 1-609-265-1500
FAX: 1-609-265-0818
They have Plain White or Color Bar labels in quantities of 1,000 and
2,500. I suggest that you call for their catalog or prices. I hesitate to
quote prices here because they may be outdated by the time you read this.
On a personal note, this program is configured to the above labels
that I use from Disks And Labels To Go. Over the course of the hundreds that
I've printed, not once have the labels ever jammed my printer or stuck to the
paper bar.
I would also like to make this absolutely clear: Disks And Labels To Go
is not paying me to put this ad in or to endorse their products. I'm doing
this for the sole purpose of providing a source of labels to those people who
would like to know where they can purchase them. I've recieved enough
inquiries to justify the inclusion of this section.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
****** FINAL STUFF ******
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This program was written in Turbo C and tested on a Panasonic 1091i
printer. The printer codes are pretty generic, however, if either labels or
hardcopies should not print out correctly, feel free to contact me at the
addresses listed below.
You'll know if it's printing correctly if, (when printing a label), the
Disk Title, (the "name" that you assign to your diskette), prints out double
wide and emphasized and the rest of the type is very, very small (but
readable).
I would also like to acknowledge the contributions of Don [ZUDD] Jernigan
for telling me about the IBM printing mode glitch, (which was fixed in version
two), and my friend, (all-around computer wizard), Bill Feero. Bill went far
beyond the call of duty in helping me iron this program out.
My thanks to both of them.
All questions, comments, and suggestions are welcomed and I can be
reached on GEnie by E-Mail at: J.VICAS or at the address in the registration
order form.

********** REGISTERED VERSION **********
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a registered version of this program available for $15.
The registered version includes:
1) This program
2) Printouts of a DOS style directory listing,
(approximately 30* file listings to a label).
3) Printout a listing of the filenames only,
(approximately 80* to a label).
*(depending on the size of the label you use.)
All printouts can be made in either label or hardcopy forms.
To order the registered version, please use the provided registration
order form at the end of this documentation.
Registering will allow me to continue making upgrades and will also
insure that you are notified of them as they become available.
Enhancements that are being considered for future upgrades include:
Support for 5 1/4 inch disk labels, allowing editing before printing, storing
and retrieving labels, and printing out a list of stored labels (catalog).
Whether or not these (or other) enhancements are made will depend
entirely upon how many registrations I receive and customer suggestions, so
please consider registering.
Thank you!
